A peaceful rally happened in Edmonton at Churchill Square “Stand with the First Nations: Rally in Defence of the treaties”.
First Nation leaders from across Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and Treaty 8 territories attended in opposition to Alberta’s separatist movement.
Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation’s legal challenge on the constitutionality of a separation referendum, Chiefs and representatives from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan, the Blackfoot Confederacy, Mikisew Cree Nation, Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta, and Confederacy of Treaty 6 First Nations spoke to the crowd gathered at Churchill Square.
“The Separation Referendum is in direct violation of Treaty rights,” said Chief Sheldon Sunshine, Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. “It is unconstitutional because Alberta cannot negate a Treaty signed with Canada.”
There were over 100 attendees at the rally.
