Mikisew Cree First Nation and Keepers of the Water is hosting a 2 day conference on March 25, 2026 until tomorrow “Tarsands Tailings Crisis: Protecting Our Water” at the River Cree Resort & Casino in Enoch, Alberta.
Indigenous leaders, elders, and community came out today to discuss the future of their water, and how to handle emerging risks posed by Alberta’s oilsands tailings ponds. The topic included alternative solutions to treat and release, treaty rights to water, cumulative impacts, health and more.
The conference brings Indigenous leaders, Knowledge Keepers, land and water defenders, legal experts, scientists, youth, and allies to examine impacts and advance solutions grounded in Indigenous rights, Science, Treaty obligations, and Indigenous water law.
