First Nations chiefs from across Alberta have unanimously passed a vote of non-confidence in the UCP government, citing concerns over growing separatist sentiment and what they describe as the government’s failure to uphold Treaty responsibilities.
The Assembly of Treaty Chiefs, representing Treaty 6, Treaty 7 and Treaty 8 unanimously passed a ‘vote of non-confidence’ at a meeting this week at the Rivercree Resort & Casino.
In a statement, Treaty 6 Grand Chief Joey Pete speaks on the resolution.
“This UCP government has created conditions in Alberta that are unsafe for First Nations peoples — promoting ignorance and intolerance along with its support for the separatist agenda is leading to outright racism,” Pete said.
On Friday morning, The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief and Council issued a statement of support for the unanimous motion of non-confidence in the Government of Alberta and the United Conservative Party.
The unanimous motion declares that the Treaty Nations have lost trust and confidence in the Government of Alberta and the UCP due to their “ongoing failure to uphold Treaty-based constitutional and governance responsibilities”
The Assembly of Treaty Chiefs is now calling on members of the UCP, the Alberta New Democratic Party and independent MLAs to bring forward and support an official vote of non-confidence in the legislature.
The UCP government has not yet publicly responded to the chiefs’ resolution.
