Monday Morning, outside the Alberta Legislative Building, students and teachers stepped up to share their voices about the current education system in Alberta.
The students were fighting for raised wages and reduced classroom sizes.
The Alberta Teachers’ Association represents 51,000 teachers and has an official strike date of October 6 if a new collective bargaining agreement is not reached. This could disrupt classes for more than 700,000 students.
The Alberta government has offered a 12% pay increase over four years and proposed hiring 3,000 new teachers to address overcrowding. The teachers’ union has rejected the government’s offer, stating that the proposed increase in teachers is not enough to fix the issue of overcrowded classrooms.
