If you’ve ever looked at a magpie and thought “that bird is giving main character energy,” then you’re ready for The Birds, a feathery, full-body comedy now soaring at the Edmonton Fringe.
The Birds is a hilarious and heart-thumping “flock-umentary” that follows two very Edmonton magpies on a journey from awkward hatchlings to seductive, groove-dropping mating machines. Think David Attenborough meets clown school, with a killer playlist.
What’s It All About?
Using movement, clowning, and a whole lot of bird puns, The Birds acts out the entire life cycle—birth, strut, flirt, dance, and death… full-on physical comedy. The show spoofs nature documentaries while holding up a mirror to our own mating rituals. (Yes, humans and birds have more in common than you might think.)
“We looked at bird mating dances,” Krista shared in the interview, “but then we were like, wait, what about human mating dances? There are some serious parallels.”
From peacocking with flashy feathers to clubbing in your best outfit to attract a mate, the show captures it all. And yes, there are balloons involved. You’ll have to see it to believe it.
Why You’ll Love It
- No bird knowledge required. This is pure comedy, set to a funky beat.
- It’s universal. Whether you’re a sunrise songbird or a midnight owl, there’s a bird (and joke) for you.
- It’s fun. “We just want to laugh with the audience,” says Anastasia. “With everything going on in the world, we need more joy.”
This or That: Bird Edition with Anastasia and Krista highlights:
- Soaring in the sky or strutting on the ground? Soaring. Always.
- Mating dance or love song? Mating dance. Every. Single. Time.
- Magpie or Raven? A tough call… but let’s just say Raven Radio walked away with at least one new fan.
