The Canadian Native Friendship Centre was organized to help Indigenous newcomers to the city with referral services and social and recreational programs.
It is a gathering place for meetings, social events, and community gatherings. Today, the centre continues to provide cultural, recreational and social programming.
The centre serves approximately 10,000 people annually through various programs, services and functions.
This year for National Indigenous Peoples Day the centre is hosting a festival at Edmonton’s Borden Park.
Some of the activities this year include handgames, traditional rattle performances and appearances by many artists and performers like Notorious Cree.
Darrell Stranger spoke with Loni Pruden and Deanna Cunningham from the Canadian Native Friendship Centre about this year’s festival and the work of the centre.
