The Alberta government has announced a 10-year plan to end gender-based violence.
Budget 2025 includes $19.8 million for the plan and its five key priorities: increasing awareness of gender-based violence, preventing gender-based violence, supporting Indigenous-led solutions, empowering women to be economically independent and supporting survivors.
“Through this strategy, our government will lay the groundwork for lasting change while addressing the root causes of gender-based violence and supporting survivors,” said Tanya Fir, Alberta Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women.
The province said the new plan was developed after engagement with more than 500 stakeholders in 11 communities, as well as Indigenous groups.
“Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit plus people disproportionately face gender-based violence. This must stop. The strategy announced today is a beacon of hope and includes tangible actions for everyone working to end gender-based violence,” said Alberta’s Minister of Indigenous Relations Rick Wilson.
