As we head into the weekend, Alberta Wildfire is warning the public that the Wildfire danger is climbing across northeast Alberta.
Conditions are very dry in the Fort McMurray Forest Area, where the risk is now rated very high, and extreme in the Lac La Biche region.
So far this year, Six wildfires have started in Fort McMurray’s forest area, with two still active but under control.
A fire restriction is now in place south of Lake Athabasca—no wood fires on public land, no fireworks, and no exploding targets. Backyard firepits and gas appliances are still allowed.
In the Grande Prairie Forest area, the the wildfire danger rating remains at very high.
Alberta Wildfire says although there has been some rain, it is not enough to provide relief, and with the current conditions, firefighters expect an increase in fire behavior.
The current fire ban for both the City and County of Grande Prairie will stay in effect; all outdoor wood fires, barbecues using charcoal and fireworks are all prohibited.
Meanwhile, the Town of Edson has instituted a full fire ban. Town officials say the fire hazard rating for Edson is currently very high.
As of Friday May 9, there are 14 active wildfires in Alberta, with most classified as under control or being held.
