Fort Saskatchewan RCMP conducted a traffic stop following a driver of a Dodge Ram who was spotted speeding excessively on Highway 21 Township Road 542 on Thursday evening.
Authorities stopped the truck and searched the vehicle, discovering a total of 7,800 illegal cigarettes, according to police.
The driver was detained under the Customs and Excise Act but has since been released.
Mounties say the illegal tobacco market continues to attract organized crime in Canada.
