A strike notice is being served today, which could affect Edmonton’s largest school board’s Educational Assistants and support staff.
CUPE Local 3550, which represents over 3,000 educational support staff, issued the strike notice. CUPE Local 4625, which represents 200 staff members from the Sturgeon Public School division, also issued strike notices on Thursday. They can strike as early as next Monday.
According to a CUPE 3550 press release, the union intends to “escalate job action” until the province addresses low wages.
Kelly Salisbury from the CUPE Local 4625 called it a “hard decision” top vote to strike but cited that it comes down to protecting education in the province.
CUPE Local 3550 members voted in favor of striking on Oct. 16. The Alberta government then approved an application presented by EPSB for a dispute inquiry board on Oct 22, halting the strike with the intent of reaching an agreement between the two parties.
Support Staff and EA’s then rejected the recommendations during a vote held in mid-December.
