Most of central and northern Alberta will be under an Extreme Cold Warning as wind chill values will be close to -40 over the weekend.
The weather office says wind chills will be moderate as temperatures rise Friday, January 3, however extreme cold conditions may return tonight and Saturday morning for some areas. Wind is expected to strengthen at times, creating colder wind chill values.
Extreme cold puts everyone at risk, and are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.
Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.
