Charges are pending following a stolen vehicle was feeling the wrong way up a major west Edmonton Road, running a red light and causing a 5 vehicle collision on New Year’s Eve.
The crash at Stony Plain Road and 178th Street happened after police were initially called about a truck driving erratically a few kilometres away on the western outskirts of the city. Police were first notified of the vehicle at 2:30pm at a gas station parking lot. The truck left the parking lot and was tracked by EPS through west Edmonton.
While following the suspect, police said the truck driver began driver on the shoulder of the road and running stop signs and red lights. Eventually making it’s return to the gas station parking lot, crews attempted to disable the vehicle, however the suspect managed to escape the scene.
A short time later, the eastbound truck on the one-way road went through a red light at the intersection of 178th Street, colliding with a Purolator delivery truck that was travelling north through the intersection at the time causing a multi-vehicle collision.
The suspect then got out of the truck and attempted to flee on foot but was detained by EPS and will face numerous charges.
