A group formed of tight-knit college friends, Darryl Saves Lives captures the essence of friendship and bond people can make over music. Drawing inspiration from the superpowers of the great pop punk and emo bands before them, the group has a way of bringing everyone back to the nostalgic basement party.
The four piece band is composed of Cole Gereghty (guitar, vocals), Nick Lai (guitar, vocals), David Le (drums), and Neal Smedegaard (bass). The group has opened for the likes of Illscarlet and great local acts like Mint Club, Medical Pilot and the Misfortune Tellers.
On September 20th, the group will headline a show at the famous Aviary venue in Edmonton with Gratuitous and The Provocateurs. The tight knit bond between musicians is seen outside of DSL as well.
Gereghty said “With Gratuitous, we went to school with them. They were really chill dudes, we really vibed with them. Last summer we played a show with The Provocateurs and got along with them really well and combine all of us together, it makes a special bill. They’re two really special bands in the scene.”
In addition to their show coming up on the 20th, the group has some new music to play as well. ‘Annoy You’ is the latest single from the guys. The track features some midwest-emo riffs with an infectious hook reminding the listeners to appreciate family and friends.
Lai wrote the song in honor of his sister, “I was living far away from my family when my sister was going through a rough time,” said Lai. “So, I wanted to write a song that could bring her some comfort, no matter how much distance there was between us. Hopefully, the warmth and connection this song brought to her can resonate with others too.”
The band worked alongside Edmonton based producer James Banks (Audiobanks) for their latest string of music, making this the first time DSL worked with the well respected producer.
“We loved the work James did with Nicolas Rage and felt he could bring us to a different level,” said Cole Gereghty. “When we met with James, we had an immediate connection and were confident that the end result would be something we would all be proud of.”
Take a listen to Cole, Nick and David speak with The Raven about their latest single, upcoming shows and work with James Banks.
