Shortly after the proposed images of what a newly renovated Commonwealth Stadium would look like, The new owner of the Edmonton Elks stated he began dialogue with the City of Edmonton about upgrading the franchises long standing facility.
According to Larry Thompson, who took ownership of Edmonton’s football club last month and became the clubs sole owner, the team has ” already had discussions with city officials” including Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.
The 56,000 seat stadium which was built to house the 1978 Commonwealth Games has been the home of Edmonton ‘s football franchise ever since and has seen multiple upgrades over the 46 years of standing on the corner of 112 Avenue and Stadium Road in central Edmonton.
We need to do something with it. We need to get some enhancements to Commonwealth Stadium, because we’ve already identified some hot spots that need to be revamped.”
When Thompson, a long-time season ticket holder initially purchased and took over ownership of the team, it was mentioned that a new stadium may be of interest.
That discussion turned to talks of upgrades.
Commonwealth also played host to sold out concerts by both P!nk and Metallica in recent weeks.
The City of Edmonton website displayed proposed renderings which appear to be upgraded to the stadium which includes new washrooms, concessions and clear panels to replace the existing metal ones to bring in more natural light into the stadium concourse, also citing that the city “recognizes the need for upgrades to align with modern event standards and enhance the overall spectator experience.”
The team is focused on enhancing the fan experience according to Rick LeLacheur, the Elks’ interim president and chief executive officer.
Both Thompson and LeLacheur also told season-ticket holders that the Elks have placed a bid to host the 2026 Grey Cup.
