At a UCP townhall event in Drayton Valley, Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith discussed the next phases of her government making changes to the current health care system in the province. This includes the removal of Alberta Health Services as the operator of some hospitals and move facilities over to other operators like Catholic health care provider Covenant Health.
Alberta’s government is in the process of setting up a system in which the government retains ownership of facilities and leases them to AHS. They’re prepared to take away their authority to operate hospitals as well.
Smith said this strategy will improve the delivery of health care and help eliminate service disruptions in rural hospitals by introducing two incentives into the existing system — competition and fear.
Smith said the government is already moving hospital authority over to Covenant Health in La Crete, stating “Covenant Health has never closed down rural hospitals.”
