For nearly a century, the Edmonton Elks have been a community owned franchise. Change is now on the way for the football club after they announced their new private owner, Larry Thompson.
Thompson is a lifelong Double E fan, going to his first game at Clarke Stadium in 1972 and has been a season ticket holder with his wife Deb for more than 30 years.
Well known for their charitable work in the Edmonton area, the entire Thompson family will continue the Club’s commitment to giving back to the community.
Larry spoke to media and fans Thursday morning and said it’s almost surreal to be in this situation.
After being community owned for 75 years, Thompson made a point of emphasis to ensure the community and fans alike will continue to “have a role, if not a larger role” under his ownership tenure.
One of the most talked about subjects with the recent announcement of Thompson’s ownership revolves around their name. The Edmonton Elks rebranded in 2021 promoting a new name, with many fans disagreeing with the change.
CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie spoke to media on Thursday morning and said him and Thompson discussed the idea however are comfortable with “EE”.
The sale of the Edmonton franchise sets the table for a return to prominence for a Club that has a long and proud history of leading the CFL on the field and in the stands. The Elks are currently 2-7 on the year and will look towards the future with the new hire.
