With high temperatures hitting the province of Alberta, many residents will be doing their best to keep cool as the heat hits the capital region this week as temperatures average 30 degrees.
Environment Canada has issued a a heat warning as the heat wave to be lingering for the next eight to ten days with the average nightly temperatures averaging 19 degrees.
Along with the high temperatures risks of heat stroke and heat exhaustion have also increased with young children and seniors at the most risk.
Symptoms of a heat stroke and heat exhaustion include:
- High body temperatures
- Lack of sweat
- Confusion
- Fainting
- Unconsciousness
AHS says anyone experiencing these symptoms should go to their nearest emergency medical centre or call 911.
Officials also want to remind Alberta residents that pets and child should NOT be left unattended in closed vehicles for any amount of time during the high temperatures.
During a response to extreme heat, helping people avoid dehydration is increasingly important. Providing access to drinking water and cool places to shelter is essential to the City’s extreme weather response.
Access to potable water stations remain available 24 hours a day at water bottle filling stations attached to fire hydrants. A complete list of water stations is available here.
