The Nation asks drivers to be mindful of safety on the roads, maintain a safe distance between vehicles and keep to safe speeds of 80km/hr or under. Smoke and dust may affect visibility and with the increased traffic, drivers are asked to use extreme caution to ensure everyone can leave safely and orderly.
The fire is 8km on the Garden River side of Highway 58 east, if the fire continues on it’s current pathway, the Nation doesn’t want people to get trapped in the community with the lack of highway access.
Little Red River Cree Nation went live on Facebook earlier this afternoon to provide details on why they called the evacuation order.
Melissa Story is with Alberta Wildfire and spoke to Windspeaker Media about the latest wildfire updates across Alberta including how Garden River residents can find up to date information.
Before residents leave the community, there will be personnel taking registration at the Wentzel River Bridge. Drivers need to stop and register everyone evacuating. Following the first stop drivers will need to make their way over to the Horizon Camp in John D’or Prairie.
If anyone has questions on the evacuation, they’re asked to contact Jacinta at 780-841-9747 or visit her at the Nation Office.
All residents must be evacuated from Garden River by 6pm today.
