A water conservation mandate is still in effect for Calgary residents.
The water conservation measures that were set in place last week are expected to last for approximately one more week as crews work at repairing the 78-inch feeder main break that is at the core of the problem.
The gaping hole in the critical water main was found in the Montgomery/ Bowness area and has affected services to thousands of home after it ruptured last Wednesday.
Even though water has been restored to supply emergency needs, the city’s infrastructure hasn’t been able to keep up with the demands of residents and the city has asked everyone to do their part by reducing water use.
Calgary residents have answered that call, according to Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek. Consumption was at approximately 650 million litres according to the Mayor.
Residents from outlying areas including Chestermere and Strathmore have also been asked to reduce water as these communities also use water from the two main plants within the city.
While crews undergo repairs in the area of the rupture, they will also be inspecting the feeder main 100 metres in both directions to check for additional damages.
As of Monday, Calgarians have been asked to maintain outdoor water restrictions. Indoor water restrictions remain voluntary and include only using washing machines and dishwashers when required and full as well as limiting showers to three minutes and baths being kept to shallow levels.
Residents are also being asked to conserve by Scraping plates rather than washing them and turning off running water while brushing teeth.
