Two people were killed following an early morning collision north of Edmonton on Tuesday.
RCMP are still investigating but believe the driver of a SUV ran a stop sign at a ‘high rate of speed’ on Range Road 130, and struck a sedan travelling east on Highway 28 shortly before 1am in Smoky Lake County.
The sedan driver, a 39 year old woman from Cold Lake died at the scene, her 36 year old passenger from Meadow Lake Saskatchewan died after being flown to hospital by STARS.
The SUV driver was not identified by police, and was hospitalized with serious life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers from the SUV were also hurt to varying degrees.
Police say alcohol and/or drugs are suspected to be a factor in the crash near Smoky Lake, about 114 km northeast of Edmonton.
