City crews start city-wide street sweeping of major roadways, Business Improvement Areas, active pathways and bike lanes on Monday, April 8. Residential road sweeping begins Monday, April 15. Street sweeping reduces damage to vehicles (e.g. cracked windshields), diverts unwanted materials from flowing into storm drains and keeps materials from disrupting air quality.
Street sweeping will run Monday to Friday, 24 hours a day. All roadways are expected to be completed by June 1, weather permitting. Night-time crews will be working on boulevards and arterial roads between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Residential roadways will be cleaned from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
An enforced parking ban will be in effect starting April 15 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays for residential neighbourhoods only when crews are scheduled and active. Vehicles must be moved off residential roadways during the week when their neighbourhood roadways are scheduled to be cleaned. Vehicles will not be towed, but owners will receive a fine of $250 per vehicle.
Residents and business owners are encouraged to remove driveway ramps from the curb when cleaning crews are in the area. Workers will avoid ramps and other items left in roadways, however, items could be damaged and this may result in missing an area for cleaning and impacting the overall completion of the neighbourhood.
Parking ban signage will be placed in each neighbourhood at least 48 hours prior to work starting. Residents can view the Street Sweeping Map and/or sign up online for Parking Ban Notifications at edmonton.ca/StreetSweeping to know when street sweeping is scheduled in their neighbourhood. The map is updated daily, as roadways are completed, residents can resume parking.
