The Women’s Basketball League (WNBA) will hold a pre-season game between the Los Angeles Sparks and the Seattle Storm at Rogers Place on May 5, 2024
The game will feature Canadian national team star Kia Nurse, last year’s scoring leader, Jewell Loyd, eight-time All-Star Nneka Ogwumike, as well as All-Star Layshia Clarendon and former Sixth Player of the Year Dearica Hamby.
According to WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, Edmonton was a “logical choice” to host the second WNBA Canada Game because of the city’s rich sporting history, with the NHL’s Oilers and CFL’s Elks having a passionate fan base.
The game in Edmonton will be the second WNBA pre-season game played in Canada. Last May, the Chicago Sky defeated the Minnesota Lynx 82-74 in front of a sold-out Scotiabank Arena crowd in Toronto, with Canadian national team member Bridget Carleton featuring for the Lynx.
Tickets for the 2024 WNBA Game will go on general sale March 20 at ticketmaster.ca.
