The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) reported a 53 % decrease in shootings last month compared to the previous year.
In January, there were a total of nine reported shooting occurrences. Of the nine occurrences, eight are believed to be targeted and six resulted in injuries. Public safety risk continued to be a concern in January, with seven of the nine shootings having the potential for innocent bystanders to be harmed. In total, 75 firearms were seized last month.
“As we continue to implement our Guns and Gangs Strategy, we are pleased to see the shooting numbers trending downward,” says Acting Inspector Eric Stewart of the Organized Crime Branch. “Thanks to the continuous and sustained efforts of our Guns and Gangs Section, including the addition of new Gang Suppression and Firearms Investigation teams, we are hopeful this trend will continue well into 2024.”
Compared to January 2023, which recorded a total of 19 shootings, occurrences were down 53% in January 2024. Over the past four months they have seen shooting occurrences trend downward compared to the previous year:
