Alberta Judge Marty T. Moreau has been nominated to fill empty seat at Canada’s Supreme Court by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“I am pleased to announce the nomination of the Honourable Mary T. Moreau to the Supreme Court of Canada, following an open and non-partisan selection process.” – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
In June 2023, Justice Russell Brown resigned from his position on Canada’s Supreme Court after servicing 13 years on the bench of Canada’s Highest Court.
Over the summer and early fall season the process was underway to find and nominate a new justice for the bench.
On October 26, 2023, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he’d be nominating Justice Mary T. Moreau of Alberta to fill the empty seat.
Justice Moreau graduated from the University of Alberta in Law in 1979 and been practicing law since 1980 as a lawyer and 14 years later, was appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench which is now the Court of King’s Bench after the passing of Queen Elizabeth the II.
She was also appointed a deputy judge of the Supreme Court of Yukon in 1996, and of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories in 2005. In 2017, she was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta.
Prime Minister Trudeau said in a press release, “I am pleased to announce the nomination of the Honourable Mary T. Moreau to the Supreme Court of Canada, following an open and non-partisan selection process. I am confident that her impressive judicial career and dedication to fairness and excellence will make Chief Justice Moreau an invaluable addition to our country’s highest court.”
Before Justice Moreau fills the empty seat, she’ll have to first participate in a special committee hearing conducted by members of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights which will be followed by a question-and-answer session on November 2, 2023.
