The City of Edmonton will be naming a new southeast school after ‘a lifelong learner who has dedicated his life to serving others’ Elder.
Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack serves as an advisor at amiskwaciy Academy and as an elder with the First People’s House at the University of Alberta, where he has worked in the education sector for more than two decades.
When the Saddle Lake Cree Nation member received the call, he said it was one of the most monumental moments of his career.
Whiskeyjack’s name was one of 353 submitted to the school board for consideration. The EPSB decided to choose his name as he’s a longtime mentor and advocate for students in the city.
Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack School, located near the corner of 17 Street and 23 Avenue Northwest next to The Meadows Community Recreation Centre, is scheduled to open in 2024.
