The Spanish Flies

The Spanish Flies: A collective of musicians with a colourful mix of indie rock, latin funk and psychedelia as their musical influences. The group makes its name with highly energetic and passionate live performances featuring latin influenced grooves. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Feliam Gamarra in Edmonton, Canada in 2016. Joined after by bassist Erik Escobar and drummer Aaron Minchau , The Spanish Flies have released two EPs: “Ignorance is Bliss” (2017) and “Good Things Come to Those Who Wait” (2018). The latter of which received a nomination at the Edmonton Music Awards (Latin Song of The Year) in 2019. Their new EP “Paradise Hotline” is set to be released on the spring of 2023 and promises to turn up the heat and get you dancing. The Flies continue to make waves in the Canadian music scene. A perfect addition to any party and an unmatched experience of indie rock and latin funk.

What are your influences as an artist?

Growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s our musical taste goes from classic and indie rock to funk and soul. We are inspired by the grooves and our musical influences cover latin american bands as well as modern north american acts.

How did you start playing music?

Fel Gamarra, the band leader, moved to Edmonton in 2014. Shortly after he realized the strong sense community in the music scene and decided to start the band to bring some latin influenced indie rock to yeg’s scene.

What is the best advice you have been given as an artist?

Be patient, positive and passionate about your art. Building connection and supporting your music community is very important. Go to shows, talk to people, make friends.
