Edmonton City Hall Unveils ‘Hear Our Voices’ Residential School Exhibit

The City of Edmonton is hosting the ‘Hear Our Voices: Michel People and Residential School Survivors’ exhibit inside City Hall that will be on display until March 2025.

The exhibit tells the stories of direct and intergenerational survivors of Residential School from Michel Band member.

Maureen Callihoo Legtvoet, member of the Friends Michel Society spoke with 89.3 The Raven, saying the feeling is amazing to have the opportunity to share the stories inside City Hall, that has a meaning of empowerment from Residential School survivors.

Ligtvoet speaks on what attendees can expect when they visit the exhibit, with hopes of visitors living the journey and to learn about the impacts from Residential School.

Gill Goerz, president of the Friends Michel Society speaks on the previous location where the exhibit was located in St. Albert Museum for the past four months, adding that Edmonton’s City Hall reached out and provided the space and support for the exhibit.

Goerz goes on to say that he hopes attendees get a better understanding of the truth of Residential School, and to hear the many stories from survivors.

Troy Courtorielle, Senior Executive Advisor for Reconciliation for the City of Edmonton says that the exhibit that exceeded his expectations, that will allow Michel Band members to tell their stories that are important to share.
