The city’s longest serving councilman is hanging up his hat.
Councilor Andrew Knack, who represents ward Nakota Isga in Edmonton’s West end was first elected in 2013 but now says it’s time for someone with ” fresh perspectives” to take the reigns on his riding.
The local politician, sporting his signature suit and glasses to match, addressed the media on Sep., 9 in a heart felt message to Edmontonians.
Although Knack is being praised by his colleagues for his contributions to City Council chambers for over a decade, he fought back emotions while speaking on the decision of his departure:
Tears flowed from the likes of fellow councilors as they, along with Mayor Amarjeet Sohi embraced the councilor, who spoke on Knacks personality which will be missed in chambers:
Major projects which come to fruition in Edmonton’s west end under Knacks time as councilor include Neighborhood renewals, The Lewis Farms Rec Centre, Coronation Park Rec Centre. and The Valley Line West LRT.
The once devoted conservative shifted to more of a centre-left position within politics throughout his three terms as councilor.
Knack once told Edify Magazine “Part of me wants to do it until the people kick me out or I retire. But the longer you stay in, the more you prevent others from putting their names forward.”
With over a year left in his term, Knack plans to make the most of that time in serving Edmontonians. No comment was made on what his future plans might be but he hasn’t ruled out a future in other levels of politics.
